BECAUSE YOU SAID SO – IMPROV SHOW REVIEW
An unorthodox blend of sharp wit, satire, comedy and all-round heartfelt laughter.
The comedy scene in Kenya is quite diverse and stretches all the way back to the pre-independence era. As an art form that is aimed at making the audience laugh and have a good time, it is surprising how comedy can raise hell and ruffle the feathers of the powers that be. This is the power that comedy holds. Stifling it only causes it to bounce back harder every time. One of the ways this happens is through different forms of comedy e.g. TV sitcoms, comedy plays, stand-up comedy – and the focus, today – Improv.
Improvisational theatre – or Improv – is defined as a form of live theatre in which the plot, characters, and dialogue of a scene….. are made up on the spot. Simply put, they make stuff up right there and then. It’s free-styling but to make you laugh. And usually, they rope in the audience just to up the stakes a little bit. Sounds interesting? Indeed it is.
Enter Because You Said So – an improv troupe founded by one Jason Runo and his band of merry men and women. Ranging from the effortlessly cool K1, the immensely multi-talented Patricia Kihoro, to the electrifying June Gachui, they all are above and beyond funny. The chemistry between the group is sublime. It’s like avocados and githeri. Having run the for the past five years, it is impressive that they are still together and thriving. Starting out at the Michael Joseph Centre, they have crisscrossed the city and even had a show in the wild. Their last edition was held at The Elephant in Nairobi, and as usual, they knocked it out of the park. Warming up the stage first was stand-up comedian Shazz, the beautiful MC for the day, alongside Ayrosh, the dread-locked Kikuyu crooner, dazzling the sizeable crowd with hits from his latest album.
Starting around 7 PM, the crew took to the forefront and began their set. From rhyming random words to reenacting the drama in estate WhatsApp groups, the six effortlessly drew hearty laughs from the audience. That all of these shenanigans were at the drop of a hat makes the experience all the more amazing. This is both pure talent and years of skill combined to put on a show like no other.
The pièce de résistance is, of course, saved for last. A karaoke show that will get you on your feet whether you like it or not. Choosing a song they know from front to back, they don their singers signature outfit and proceed to deliver a performance worthy of the musical gods. From Mugambi tearing it up redoing Ante Up to Jason paying homage to Ayrosh, the crowd ate it all up and couldn’t get enough. This is the perfect blend of comedy and live performances. If you’re looking for a night of knee-slapping laughter, laced with razor-sharp satire to enjoy with a couple of friends and family, then Because You Said So is just what you need.
